CHOIR DIRECTOR/ORGANIST

Colesville Presbyterian Church (CPC), Silver Spring, Maryland

 

Time of contract:  To begin no later than May 2, 2022. Job performance and satisfaction reviewed annually as a basis for extending contract.

 

Qualifications:  

·      Experience with church music preferred

·      Proficient in piano and organ (CPC uses a Tracker organ)

·      Proficient in choral, vocal, and conducting technique

·      Ability to run an organized rehearsal and teach singing technique as needed

·      Ability to choose appropriate music for the adult choir and direct them in rehearsal and during worship services

·      Experience with handbells is a plus

·      Must have excellent communication skills and be able to work in a team environment with choir members,  colleagues in ministry, and office staff

·      Understand and be guided by the Presbyterian Association of Musicians Code of Ethics

·      Ability to adapt  to our pandemic-related practice of livestreaming worship services, including the recording of hymns, anthems, and other worship -related music

 

Job description:

·      Provide overall leadership of the music program at CPC. Work with the Pastor and Worship Committee chairs to coordinate the musical aspects of the worship service. 

·      Direct weekly rehearsals for and performances by adult choir( Note:  During the pandemic, the choir is not singing)

·      Direct weekly rehearsals for and occasional performances by the hand-bell choir

·      Direct rehearsals for and performance of special holiday music including Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Christmas Eve and Memorial Services

·      Maintain music library

·      Recruit choir members from inside and outside of CPC

·      Direct music for 11:00 A.M. traditional Sunday worship service on all Sundays when the adult choir sings or hand-bell choir rings. While traditional, our congregation enjoys the music of diverse cultures and time periods from Early Music to Gospel, International and Modern Music. (Note: During the pandemic service is being held at 10:00 A.M. and the choir is not singing. During this time recruit and arrange for singers or instrumentalists to provide special music during worship. Rehearse with the musicians and pre-record when necessary)

·      Accompany musicians when necessary, during worship service

·      Select appropriate anthems and other appropriate music for worship service

·      Arrange for substitute coverage if unable to serve on a given week, and inform the Worship Committee Chair when unavailable

·      Responsible for procurring musicians for special music

·      Schedule piano and/or organ repair/maintenance with the assistance of the Operations Committee Chair, as needed

·      Report to Head of Staff (Senior Pastor) and attend weekly staff meetings

·      Work collegially with all church staff, be a team player

 

 

Time:  

Part-time 15-20  hours per week - 1 Sunday service, 2 weekly rehearsals,  special services (Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Christmas Eve)
 

Compensation:  $1,800 -$2,000 per month, commensurate with experience

·      2 weeks of paid vacation

·      Sick leave as needed
